Herrenchiemsee (New Palace), located on an island in Chiemsee lake near Munich, was commissioned by Bavarian King Ludwig II, who was a big fan of King Louis XIV. Construction of the Bavarian Versailles had not yet been completed when Ludwig II died in 1886. While only a fraction of the size of the actual Palace of Versailles, the Bavarian palace does feature grand, Rococo-style decor, a Great Hall of Mirrors, and an impressive garden.:
