Rwanda - Kwita Izina is an annual naming ceremony in Rwanda for baby mountain gorillas born in the past year. The tradition is based on another naming ceremony for human infants. The celebration started in 2005, but park rangers and researchers had been naming gorillas for decades for tracking purposes, giving each baby gorilla a name in Kinyarwanda, the official language of Rwanda. The baby gorillas are not present for the ceremony, which takes place near Volcanoes National Park, home to 20 gorilla families in the Virunga Mountains. The naming ceremony coincides with a conference on conservation, as well as educational exhibits and community events celebrating the mountain gorilla.:
