According to state law, anyone over 16 who “directs any profane, obscene or impure language or slanderous statement at a participant or an official in a sporting event, shall be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars.” The law’s been on the books for a few years, so presumably $50 was originally more of a deterrent. That’s not the only law against cursing in The Bay State, either. Section 36 of Chapter 272, Title I, notes that “Whoever willfully blasphemes the holy name of God by denying, cursing or contumeliously reproaching God, his creation, government or final judging of the world …” (it goes on) can be jailed for up to a year or fined up to $300. Those are far from the only weird laws on the books in Massachusetts, so mind your manners if you visit!:
