The massive brick archway is part of Taq Kasra, which was part of a Sasanian king’s palace in the late 6th century. The arch measures 120 feet tall and 85 feet wide, making it one of the largest, single-span vaults of unreinforced brickwork. In 637 A.D., Arabs took control of the city and turned Taq Kasra into a mosque. By the 8th century, Baghdad was bustling, while Ctesiphon became a ghost town.:
