Like any other well, these were built to store freshwater, but the stepwells of India are more than just a hole in the ground. The stepwells were built as a meeting place, and the Toorji Ka Jhalra in Jodhpur, India is currently used as a swimming pool. It even hosted a cliff-diving competition in 2019. Commissioned by Maharani Gulab Rai in the 18th century, women traditionally oversaw the construction of stepwells like this one.:
