King Bodawpaya initiated construction on Mingun Pahtodawgyi in 1790, planning a 500-foot-tall temple and enslaving thousands of people to build it. But the king slowed work on the project after a prophecy suggested completion of construction would result in his death. When Bodawpaya died, construction was abandoned completely, and the massive cracks appeared after an earthquake in 1839. The stupa’s accompanying bell was completed and lies nearby, measuring 12 feet high and weighing 200,000 pounds.:
