Located in Calabria (the toe of Italy’s boot), the region was part of Magna Graecia, the coastal area of Italy that was once part of Hellenic Greece. The region still maintains some Greek traditions. This cathedral in the town of Stilo was built in the Greek architectural style with four columns dividing the interior into nine equal squares. The church’s columns and other building materials appear to have been reused from the ruins of Kaulon, a nearby ancient Magna Graecia city abandoned around 200 B.C.:
