At around 400 feet in length, the bridge is said to be the longest inhabited European bridge, with 32 buildings arranged across it. Initially, there were 62 very narrow buildings, but the bridge has since been redeveloped from its original stone construction in 1325. Prior to being built of stone, the Merchants’ Bridge was made of wood, while only one of the two bridgehead churches that once bookended the bridge still stands.
