Botany Bay, Australia - Australia’s Botany Bay once went by an even more memorable moniker: Stingray Harbour. Captain James Cook’s first landing in Australia in 1770 was at this bay, which he first named for the large number of stingrays he saw within it. Within just a few days, however, the naturalist accompanying Cook on his expedition had found so many new plants nearby that Cook decided to rename the place “Botanist Harbour,” which eventually became “Botany Bay.” The naturalist, Joseph Banks, and his assistants collected 132 pant specimens in just six days — the first scientific collection of Australian flora. While it no longer has its menacing nickname, Botany Bay is remembered for Cook’s landing and the beginning of Britain’s interest in Australia.:
