Montana - Montana is nicknamed the Treasure State because of the large quantities of gold and silver that were discovered there in the mid-19th century. One of Montana’s early prospectors was named John Crab, and a settlement he founded was named Crabtown in his honor. As more miners moved to the area in the 1860s, the settlement was renamed Helena, after the town of Saint Helena, Minnesota — where many of the miners hailed from. Helena became the capital of the Montana Territory in 1875. Before Helena’s residents settled on that name, other names suggested for the city included Pumpkinville and Squashtown. (Admittedly, that might have been because the town planning meeting took place around Halloween.):
