While the roughly 47,000 aspens — which turn a beautiful, bright yellow in the fall — appear to be individual specimens, they are actually part of a single organism. Quaking aspens normally reproduce asexually, sprouting from a single root system to produce genetically identical trees all interconnected underground. Fittingly, the grove is also called Pando, which is Latin for “I spread.” Quaking aspens are often considered the world’s largest organism, although some scientists now give that crown to fungal mats in Oregon.:
