Sully Prudhomme - The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in December 1901, funded by the fortune of Alfred Nobel. In his will, Nobel — inventor of dynamite and other explosives — stated that he wished to create prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. The first Nobel prize in literature went to French poet Sully Prudhomme. Prudhomme was born in 1839 and had originally wanted to become an engineer. When an eye disease put an end to his intended career, he turned to poetry. Judges said that his work showed "a rare combination of the qualities of both heart and intellect.” :
