On Earth, pilots at cruising altitude can see the light from about 275 miles away on a clear night. Each of the xenon lamps costs about $1,200 and is about the size of a washing machine. The lights are so bright and hot that they create their own ecosystem, attracting moths, which are preyed on by bats and other predatory birds.:
