Until the 1960s, people believed it was a meteorite crater, but geologists determined it is a “maar,” a crater formed by an underground steam explosion when groundwater comes into contact with hot lava or magma. At roughly one million years old, the crater is over 800 feet deep and more than a mile in diameter. In addition to the surrounding volcanic rocks and the vast desert landscape, the bottom center of the Al Wahbah Crater appears white due to sodium phosphate crystals — a natural salt field formed in the crater.:
