China - Paper certificates representing sums of money were first used by wealthy business owners and government officials in China during the Tang Dynasty, between 618–907 CE, where they were known as “flying money.” But individual notes representing currency that could be exchanged among ordinary people were not introduced until the Song Dynasty, which began in 960. Known as "Jiaozi," they were originally printed by select merchants and could either be exchanged for coin-based currency or traded among individuals. A few decades later, after issues with inflation, the government decided to move the printing of money in-house, releasing the first nationally backed paper note, called "Huizi." But good luck stuffing a bunch of these in your pocket — based on a printing plate from around 1023, historians believe these first notes were about the size of a sheet of A4 printer paper (8.3 x 11.7 inches).:
