Delft, Netherlands - In the 17th century, porcelain was all the rage amongst the European elite. Chinese artists had been crafting porcelain since the 13th century, and Dutch traders learned of them in the late 1500s. However, the traders were forbidden from traveling inland to learn how to make porcelain, instead receiving the goods from an intermediary in Jakarta. Eventually ceramicists across Europe tried to replicate the Chinese designs, and artisans in Delft — a canal-lined city in western Holland — started producing some of the best imitations as early as the 1620s, adding a distinctive blue-and-white aesthetic. Delftware fell out of popularity by around 1700, but antique collectors spurred a resurgence in the products in the late 19th century, and they are considered a Dutch national symbol today.:
