Ten years after New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay became the first men ever to stand atop the peak, a team of 20 assembled as part of the American Mount Everest Expedition. Thirty-six-year-old Jim Whittaker, arguably the strongest of the group, became the first of several U.S. climbers who would ultimately ascend the 29,035-foot mountain on that expedition. Despite extreme danger and even tragedy on the climb — including nearly running out of oxygen and getting a frozen eyeball — Whittaker was able to stand where few ever had before.
