Step 2 : Answer to the question "Who was the first American to climb Mt. Everest?"

Jim Whittaker - On May 1, 1963, Jim Whittaker became the first American to successfully ascend the summit of Mount Everest. Ten years after New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay became the first men ever to stand atop the peak, a team of 20 assembled as part of the American Mount Everest Expedition. Thirty-six-year-old Jim Whittaker, arguably the strongest of the group, became the first of several U.S. climbers who would ultimately ascend the 29,035-foot mountain on that expedition. Despite extreme danger and even tragedy on the climb — including nearly running out of oxygen and getting a frozen eyeball — Whittaker was able to stand where few ever had before. His success flung him into fame, and also helped burnish the image of REI, where he was the company’s first full-time employee.:
