It also happens to be the birthday of the U.S. army, which began enlisting soldiers on June 14 (though two years earlier). Though a holiday was proposed in the 1800s, it wasn’t until 1949 that Flag Day became a national holiday. Still, it is not a federal holiday, and in fact, only one state recognizes June 14 as an official holiday: Pennsylvania.
