Brazil - Made from a thick blend of deep-purple açaí berries and often topped with fruit, granola, honey, and nut butters, açaí bowls are in high demand these days, but they have humble origins in the Amazon river delta of Brazil — where the small antioxidant-rich berries grow on palm trees and have been eaten locally for thousands of years. The popularity of the berries took off in the 1980s, after the prominent Gracie family, known for their Brazilian jiu jitsu gyms, worked it into their training diets by blending açaí with banana and sometimes guarana, a sweet berry native to Brazil. After becoming a staple across Brazil, açaí bowls made their way stateside in the 2000s, when two California brothers figured out how to import the berries (which don’t travel well unless frozen) and successfully marketed the açaí bowl as a healthy pick-me-up.:
