"Foster's Rule," as it came to be known, is an evolutionary biology principle that became the core of island biogeography study. "Foster's Rule" states that the members of a species will, over time and through the evolutionary process, grow bigger or become smaller depending on the amount and type of resources available to it in the local environment. Foster studied 116 island species, comparing them to their mainland counterparts. He concluded that small creatures will become larger over time in the absence of predators, and larger animals become smaller over time because of inadequate food sources.
