The ocean - Scientists estimate that 50% to 80% of the world’s oxygen comes from our oceans, thanks to its extensive collection of small, usually microscopic, organisms called phytoplankton. One type of phytoplankton, Prochlorococcus is a tiny plant-like bacteria that alone is responsible for creating 20% of the ocean’s oxygen — more oxygen produced than all tropical rainforests combined. Phytoplankton produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Like land plants, these oceanic plants absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide to make food, then release oxygen into the water during the process. While much of this oxygen is consumed by marine life (because these critters need oxygen to survive, too), the rest makes its way into Earth's atmosphere.:
