Nine American ships, led by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, defeated six British warships — the first unqualified defeat of a British naval squadron in history. The Battle of Lake Erie ensured U.S. control over Lake Erie, as well as most of the Great Lakes region, by forcing the British out of Detroit. It is also sometimes called the Battle of Put-in-Bay, named after the village near where the battle took place and where the 352-foot-high Perry Monument stands within Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, commemorating the men who fought in the battle.:
