The 1910 Height of Buildings Act stipulated that buildings in Washington, D.C., could be no taller than the width of the street they face. Since then, buildings generally max out at about 130 feet or 11 stories tall. The law was an effort to preserve the capital’s urban character with broad streets and expansive views of government buildings. It was passed partly due to citizen backlash from the 1894 construction of the Cairo Hotel, which is 164 feet (12 stories) tall. The hotel remains the tallest private building in D.C., but the tallest structure overall is the 555-foot-tall Washington Monument, completed in 1848.:
