The dramatic canyon was carved by the Bighorn River, and construction of the Yellowtail Dam in the 1960s led to the creation of Bighorn Lake. The dam was named for Robert Yellowtail, chairman of the Crow tribe, although, ironically, he was firmly opposed to the building of the dam. Today the 68,000-acre Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area extends along the river and lake from the Crow Reservation in Montana south into north-central Wyoming.:
