Step 2 : Answer to the question "What is the main source of the Mississippi River?"
Lake Itasca - Although the mighty Mississippi flows an impressive 2,348 miles to the Gulf of Mexico and stretches 11 miles across at its widest, it begins as a tiny stream stemming from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca. This 1.8-square-mile glacial lake in Itasca State Park, named by American geographer Henry Schoolcraft from a combination of two Latin words: “veritas” (truth) and “caput” (head). It’s a fitting name, as the lake serves as the headwaters of the Mississippi — something which Schoolcraft himself identified in 1832. Lake Itasca is also known by its Ojibwe name, Omashkoozo-zaaga’igan, which means Elk Lake. :
