Cleveland - By the early 20th century, the world’s streets had become busier than ever. People, horses, trams, and newly invented cars were all jostling to get out of each other's way. By 1908, driving on the left side of the road had become standard in the U.S., and the first painted road signs began to appear a few years later. But it was the traffic light that helped to create order out of chaos. In 1868, a London street was fitted with a semaphore device that could signal carriages to stop — widely regarded as the world’s first traffic signal. The first electric traffic signal went into operation in 1914 at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. Similar to today’s traffic lights, the system used a series of lights to warn drivers, with red telling them to stop, and green advising it was safe to go.:
