Marengo - Napoleon bought his warhorse in Egypt in 1799 when he was commanding the French army. A year later, Napoleon seized power and became the "First Consul" of France. He named the horse "Marengo" after the Italian village where he won a famous victory over the Austrians in 1800. Marengo was a great warhorse, remaining calm in battle, and despite being wounded eight times, he never threw his master. When the French were defeated at Waterloo, the British took Marengo and put him on display in London. Marengo died in 1831 and his skeleton is preserved at the National Army Museum in London.:
