Odesa, Ukraine - Want to get in a quick workout on your next trip? Take a stroll up (or down) the famed Potemkin Stairs in Odesa. This architectural marvel was completed in 1841 and was specifically designed to be an optical illusion. From the top of the stairs, you can only see landings. While at the bottom of the stairs, you can only see steps — all 192 of them! The steps were nicknamed the “Potemkin Stairs” after the famous Soviet silent film “Battleship Potemkin” (1925), which has been regarded as years ahead of its time for the montage editing techniques used to create it. A key moment in the film involves a massive battle on the steps — one that apparently inspired films like “The Godfather” (1972) and “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” (2005). The correlation between the steps and the movie stuck, and so did the new name when it was first used in the 1950s.:
