It also lets out a particularly thundering fog signal in the event of low visibility. Three lighthouse keepers operated the candy-striped tower for nearly a century, enabling ship captains to know the lighthouse’s coordinates for up to 26 nautical miles. Today, the lighthouse is fully automated, and it remains a beacon for seamen adrift in the English Channel.:
