Italy - Piero Puricelli from Milan, Italy was the mastermind behind the world's first motorway. He realized that a long, straight road without wagons or pedestrians would allow cars to travel more quickly from one destination to another. In the fall of 1924, the world's first motorway, the A8, stretching from Milan to Varese, was officially opened to traffic. Puricelli planned for the construction of the road to be covered by a toll, but the costs soon ballooned and the government stepped in to finance the completion of the project. The motorway was a success, Puricelli was hailed as a trailblazer, and soon similar fast roads opened in New York and Germany. :
