Formed by the construction of Hoover Dam in 1931, Lake Mead covers an area 247 square miles and contains 26.12 million acre-feet of water when filled to capacity. However, the lake is usually only at 40% capacity and is currently at record low water levels. Mead isn’t the only large reservoir in Arizona: The southern tip of Lake Powell, the country’s second-largest reservoir, is also located in the state. Created by the Glen Canyon Dam in 1956, Lake Powell covers 254.1 square miles and holds 24.32 million acre-feet of water at full capacity. Like Lake Mead, it is currently experiencing record low water levels due to the ongoing drought in the West.:
