Barbados - America’s first president accomplished quite a lot during his lifetime, but he wasn’t much of a world traveler. In 1751, his half-brother Lawrence Washington came down with tuberculosis, and George Washington (then 19 years old) accompanied him to spend a winter in sunny Barbados in hopes of recovering. This was the farthest Washington would travel from his Virginia home and the only time he left mainland North America during his life. The trip wasn’t all sunshine, unfortunately: Washington contracted smallpox and spent much of the trip recuperating. The home where the Washington brothers stayed on the island has been preserved as a museum.:
