Tortoise - When Spanish sailors arrived at the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador in 1535, tortoises were so abundant that they named the archipelago after the creatures. (The Spanish word for tortoise is galápago.) At one point, some 250,000 tortoises called the waters home, but today only 15,000 remain in the wild. Galápagos tortoises can live for more than 100 years, grow to five feet long, and weigh up to 500 pounds — they are the largest tortoises in the world. There are 13 species remaining in the wild, but many of them are listed as critically endangered. :
