The regions first became part of the United States after their annexation following the end of the Mexican-American War and the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which transferred ownership of the land. However, statehood was not immediate. Disputes about the state constitutions and territorial boundaries slowed the process of statehood until the 20th century. Finally, on January 6, 1912, President William Taft signed the bill making New Mexico the 47th state. Thirty-nine days later, he did the same for Arizona. Those would be the last new states until Alaska and Hawaii were added in 1959.:
