Italy - Italy's Parco dei Mostri, or Park of Monsters, has been startling visitors since the mid-16th century. It was commissioned by Pier Francesco "Vicino" Orsini, a duke and military leader in the pope's army. The park, also known as Sacro Bosco or the Garden of Bomarzo, features several strange sculptures carved from volcanic rock, including a war elephant, a giant turtle, and this huge head, which has the words, "All reason departs," etched on its upper lip. Some think Orsini built the park as a reaction to his experiences with war and grief, although he later recovered enough to start painting the sculptures in bright colors. Initially a product of the Italian Renaissance, the park later found fame with Surrealists such as Salvador DalĂ­, who produced a short film about it.:
