So it’s no surprise that the country is home to America’s oldest diplomatic property, the American Legation in Tangier. Americans established a consulate in Morocco in 1797, and in 1821, Sultan Moulay Suliman gifted a home for the American Consul General — it was the first American public property located outside the U.S. Today, the U.S. embassy is located in Rabat, and the American Legion in Tangier is now a museum and research library that explores the historic relationship between the U.S. and Morocco. It is also a U.S. National Historic Landmark — the only one located outside of the U.S.:
