Syria - Constructed between 1319 and 1304 BCE, the world’s oldest operating dam is located in Syria. Known as Quatinah Barrage or Lake Homs Dam, it dams up the Orontes River to form Lake Homs. The ancient dam was once believed to be commissioned by the Egyptian pharaoh Sethi but was more likely ordered built by Roman emperor Diocletian in order to feed the water supply through the canals in the city of Homs.
