Step 1 : Introduction to the question " When did the first Russian cosmonaut land on the moon? "
...
Russia won the first round of the space race when it launched the first man to orbit the Earth, Yuri Gagarin, in 1961. But it lost badly to the United States in the ensuing decades as far as sending a cosmonaut to the moon.
Since 1961, no Russian cosmonaut has either attempted or made a moon landing. Russia regularly sends humans into orbit and has co-operated with other countries on Mir and the International Space Station (ISS), but getting a man to the moon has never seemed to be a priority.
A spacecraft will “conduct a demonstrative manned circumlunar test flight with the subsequent landing of cosmonauts on [the Moon’s] surface and their return to Earth” by 2030, according to a leaked strategy document from Russia’s space agency, Roskosmos.
Skeptics claim that Russia's space budget is not adequate to maintain a world-class space effort across the board and, therefore, the chances of accomplishing such a goal are minuscule at best. From 2012-2017, the Russian space program has seen an abysmal 15 rocket failures, and corruption scandals severely set back the construction of the new Vostochny Cosmodrome, a new $3 billion space launch site in the country’s far east.
