Bugsy Siegel - On December 26, 1946, Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. Contrary to popular belief, it was not the town's first casino. It was, however, the first one to carry a certain air of glitz and glamor, with the other hotels being cowboy-style saloons. Unfortunately, the opening night was a flop. Despite the stars in attendance, many couldn't make the journey because of bad weather. The Flamingo lost money and closed after just two weeks, re-opening a few months later as the Fabulous Flamingo. Today, the hotel survives as the Flamingo Las Vegas.:
