The Swiss Guard - In 1506 the "warrior pope" Julian II secured his position by bringing in 150 mercenaries from Switzerland to act as his bodyguards. Since then, the Swiss Guards have continually acted as the Vatican's army, making them one of the longest continually-serving military units in history. The Swiss Guards' eye-catching uniform is based on the 16th-century original and consists of blue and orange striped knickerbockers and tunic topped off with a helmet plumed with red feathers. The soldiers also carry a medieval halberd which is a 7-foot pole tipped with a combination of an ax, spear, and billhook. Membership to the elite unit is open to any male Catholic Swiss national between the ages of 19 and 30 as long as they are over 5-foot-8-inches tall.:
