Winnipeg, Manitoba - In 1926, A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh was brought to life. Although the books’ characters were based on his own son, Christopher Robin, and the toy bear he received on his first birthday, that original bear was named Edward, not Winnie. Milne was inspired to name the character after a brown bear that he and his son visited in the London Zoo. The bear was brought to England when he was just a cub and was named for the city of Winnipeg by the Canadian veterinary surgeon who brought him over. The “Pooh” came from a nickname Christopher Robin had for the swan that he and Milne often fed in the mornings.:
