The site holds a controversial monument to British explorer Captain Cook, who, in 1778, was first European to spot the Hawaiian Islands, which he named the “Sandwich Islands” after the Earl of Sandwich. In 1779, Cook made contact with the Indigenous population on the Big Island. While the original reception was positive, relations turned violent and he was killed a week later. A 27-foot obelisk was erected at Kealakekua Bay in 1878 in what was believed to be the spot where he died. The monument is now maintained by the British Royal Navy, and the nearby coast is a popular site for snorkeling.:
