Born in Coventry, England, in 1755, Hale attended Yale University and later became a captain in the Continental Army. When he was caught spying on the British, the Redcoats decided to forego a trial and hang him. Wise beyond his years at a mere 21 years old, Hale’s last words remain on statues in both New Haven and Washington, D.C.: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”:
