He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1991, but didn't share it publicly until 1998. The disease forced him to retire from the series "Spin City". He started the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help Parkinson's research and is an advocate of controversial stem-cell research, to possibly find a cure for the disease. Michael's mother, Phyllis also works and travels extensively to aid in fundraising for Parkinson's disease. In 2002, his memoir "Lucky Man" was published.
