Vienna - St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a significant landmark in Vienna’s city center, featuring a limestone fa├žade showcasing both Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles. The church was first built in 1137 on an ancient Roman cemetery, but most of it was rebuilt after a fire in 1258. Another fire in 1945 destroyed much of the original timber roof and caused its 18th-century bell to fall and break. The north bell tower of St. Stephen’s contains “Pummerin,” one of Europe’s largest free-swinging bells. The cathedral has a unique colorful tile mosaic on its roof featuring a diamond pattern in white, yellow, green, and brown. The northern side of the roof features the coats of arms for both Vienna and Austria, while the southern side of the roof depicts a massive imperial double-headed eagle.:
