The border forms a partial arc of a perfect circle where the First State meets Pennsylvania. In 1682, when the Duke of York originally granted Delaware to William Penn, he defined its top section as “all that the Towne of Newcastle otherwise called Delaware and All that Tract of Land lying within the Compass or Circle of 12 Miles about the same." Essentially, Delaware was defined as a 12-mile circle around New Castle. While over the centuries its border expanded south, its northernmost reaches are still in the shape of a perfect circle, unique among all other borders in the United States.:
