St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line - Riding the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line in New Orleans is like going back in time. The olive green cars are from the 1920s, and make distinctive clacking sounds as they roll through some of the city’s loveliest streets. The line started operating in 1835 as a railway, and originally connected New Orleans to what was then the suburb of Carrollton (now part of the city proper). When buses began operating in the city in the mid-20th century, most of the streetcars disappeared, but preservationists fought to save the St. Charles line. Today, New Orleans has multiple streetcar lines, but the St. Charles line remains a favorite.:
