Estonia - The longest ice road in Europe stretches more than 16 miles across the surface of the Baltic Sea. It is only open about three months of the year (if at all) — when the ice is thick enough to connect the island of Hiiumaa to mainland Estonia. It is one of six “official” ice roads in Estonia, although 2011 was the last time all six ice roads were in operation at once. In January, engineers monitor the conditions and plot the routes across the parts of the ice that are at least nine inches thick with no cracks. Drivers are instructed not to drive between about 15 to 25 mph, as the vibration can create unsafe conditions. Seatbelts are also banned, so drivers can make a speedy exit in case the car does start to sink. :
