Invented in the 1840s by Alabama Vest of Macon, Georgia, the kazoo was introduced at the Georgia State Fair in 1852. It was originally called the "Down-South Submarine" because of its shape. Nevertheless, it didn't become popular until 1912, when two businessmen started "The Original American Kazoo Company" and started producing metal versions of the instrument.:
