It is a natural stone arch that stretches roughly 1,500 feet from the ground to the peak of the arch, meaning that the Empire State Building could comfortably fit beneath it. The arch first gained popularity in 1947, when it was "discovered" by Eric Shipton, thanks to tips from local guides. For a few years, Guinness listed it as the "tallest natural arch," but then removed the status because they couldn't confirm its location or that it even existed at all. The arch's remote location in the Chinese mountains meant that few people had ever seen it, and it didn't become well-known again until 2000 when a team from National Geographic went to find it.:
